Tales from the Crypt: The McCartney Chronicles, Cont.
If you, like myself, want for some reason to take a crash course on the new McCartney standards album and then try all your living days to forget what you learned, then this is the video for you. I already feel guilty for presenting you with the opportunity, dear reader.
For those of you who are unfamiliar, Paul McCartney was one of the driving forces behind the popular 1960’s British Invasion band the Beatles, penning some of their greatest hits, including “Yesterday,” “Penny Lane,” and “Hey Jude.” He has recently released a new album of standards, backed by nu-jazz vocalist/pianist Diana Krall and her renowned rhythm section.
Affecting a distinctive smoky croon recalling the intonations of a morose grandmother frog, in his head Paul hears himself as a kind of eunuch Holliday/Crosby combo (Bing, not David). It might interest fans of music (“everything except rap and country”) to know this album has guest spots from rock’n’roll favorites Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder- exactly the sort of people I wouldn’t expect to be guesting on a Paul McCartney standards album.
One time I was “dumpster diving” for day-old donuts at a Krispy Kreme in the suburbs of Pittsburgh and I fell into the dumpster by accident. My face was pushed deep into a trash bag and I struggled for about two minutes to get out of the dumpster.
With that in mind, enjoy the entirety of the Kisses on the Bottom album, which is available for sale at Starbucks nationwide, in a little over seven minutes. I got through it, chiefly because it’s hard to tell there are even different songs being represented. It’s kind of like an experience I once had clicking through a Merzbow album on iTunes.
Best of luck, and as George Gershwin once said, “Hello, I’ll have a tall Blonde Roast, a red velvet caramel mini cupcake and a copy of Kisses on the Bottom, please.”
