TGIF - thanks to Nikki of the Pints and the Party for showing me this one, and apparently also thanks to Dave Grohl, who thinks this is the “most beautiful piece of music ever written.” Fuck Dave Grohl, but fuck yes to this song! -Rats Only saying hello

Casual- “Follow the Funk”

The work of Oakland battle rapper (and Del the Funky Homosapien affiliate) Casual has been somewhat forgotten by the sands of time, though he’s still busy putting out albums and mixtapes. He debuted with 1994’s Fear Itself, a Jive-released album which is an excellent combination of full-blown, hook-based tracks and goofy freestyles. He’s a creative and instantly likeable MC both in terms of flow and content. I recommend Casual for fans of KMD, Das EFX and early Brand Nubian- it’s kind of a West Coast take on that sort of fun. If you want a solid group of songs that all rock to the same basic BPM and backbeat, Fear Itself is for you. Here’s the possible standout of the album.

Washington Phillips- “Mother’s Last Word to Her Son”

The Key to the Kingdom is the greatest musical discovery I’ve made in the last half-year. It’s Yazoo’s collection of all of gospel singer and dulceola player Washington Phillips’ recorded work. It’s available on Spotify for your perusal. If you’ve never listened to anything I’ve recommended on this blog, please at least listen to this.
